The Homeless and Other People on the Outside Looking In

A homeless looking beggar crashed a gathering of over 600 Orthodox young adults and 50 more Orthodox laity and clergy in September of 2021 that took place at an elegant resort. He begged for 75 minutes and got some very surprising results.

In January 2020, there were 580,466 people experiencing homelessness in America. Families with children are 30% of that number. There were numerically more whites who were homeless than minorities.

The pre-COVID homeless numbers exceeded the populations of any of Baltimore, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Tucson, Sacramento, Cleveland, Kansas City, Tampa, or Miami. We don’t yet know how much worse it is now.

Add to this, nearly 1 in 5 Americans experience some form of mental illness, and 10 million adults in America live with a serious mental illness. One-half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14 and three-quarters by the age of 24.

All of these many millions of Americans who are your neighbors, friends, or family were made in the image and likeness of the same God in whose image an likeness you were made. They are suffering in one way or the other, and they often feel like outsiders looking in at the rest of the world of “normal” people.

On 11-3-21, learn what happened to the beggar who crashed an Orthodox event, and hear from four dedicated Orthodox Christians who are making a difference in this mission field through their personal efforts and ministries.

We will speak with Fr. Justin Mathews (Reconciliation Services), Chrysanthe Loizos (St. Herman House – Focus Cleveland),  Dorrie Papademetriou (MudGirls Studios), Jennifer Hertberg (Grief Counseling).
